BILL STEELE
December 15, 1922 – May 26, 2008
Bill Steele, who with Lowell White founded White and Steele in 1953, died on Monday, May 26, 2008, at the age of 85. Mr. Steele was a pillar of the legal community in Denver for more than 40 years, serving as the President of the Colorado Bar Association in 1963, President of the International Association of Defense Counsel from 1973 to 1974, President of the Colorado State Historical Society from 1969 to 1973, and was recipient of the William Lee Knous Award from the University of Colorado Law School in 1994, the highest alumni award given by the University of Colorado School of Law.
Although Mr. Steele’s legal accomplishments were numerous and impressive, those who were privileged to practice law with Bill and work with him will remember him most fondly for his compassion, generosity and integrity. Bill’s legacy still stands as the foundation of the White and Steele law firm.
Mr. Steele was born in Denver in 1922, the son of a Denver District Court Judge and the grandson of a Colorado Supreme Court Justice. He attended college at Princeton University and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II, flying B-24 bombers. In 1944, Bill married Patsy White, the daughter of Denver lawyer Lowell White. Upon returning from his war service, Bill attended the University of Colorado School of Law and began practicing law in 1949. In 1953 Mr. Steele and Mr. White formed the law firm of White and Steele, P.C., where Bill practiced until he retired in 1993.
Bill Steele is survived by his wife, Patsy Steele, his son Peter Steele, and his daughter Amy Steele. Bill will always be remembered by those who knew him.
